In this book Steinback described the struggle of the Joad family who left behind the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma go to “the promised land” (California). Excerpts of the book can be used to show how the Great Depression affected the small farmers as well as the westward migration of many who were in search of a better future. (Claudia V., Summer 2008)

This book describes the life of a landowner African American family who live in Mississippi during the 1930’s. Aside from struggling to maintain their land during the Great Depression, the book describes the family’s attempts to stay together to overcome the racial discrimination they encounter and how to explain it to the younger members of the family. It is important for students to understand that all people were affected by the Great Depression and that besides having to struggle with racial segregation, African Americans had to struggle with the economy slump of the 1930’s. This is grew out of Teachers College Internship in Technology and Education along with support from the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, the Institute for Learning Technologies and the New Deal Network (Claudia V., Summer 2008)
